CAIRO, Aug 27: A daring highway robbery of a refrigerated truck carrying frozen poultry ended in a deadly shootout with Egyptian security forces, leaving three suspects dead and three others arrested, the Interior Ministry said.
The robbery took place on August 25, 2026, on the Cairo-Ismailia Desert Road, where the suspects allegedly used a green pickup truck to follow the moving poultry truck and climb onto it while it was travelling at high speed. They reportedly forced open the rear doors, stole boxes of poultry and escaped.
Footage of the dramatic robbery, filmed by a passing motorist, quickly went viral on social media and drew widespread attention.
Investigators identified the suspects as a six-member criminal gang and tracked them to several hideouts in Cairo and Qalyubia. When security forces moved to arrest them, the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering a shootout in which three were killed and the other three were arrested.
Police recovered the green pickup truck, two automatic rifles, a shotgun, and the stolen poultry.
The three arrested suspects were referred to the Public Prosecution on charges including armed robbery, illegal weapons possession, and firing at security forces.
