KUWAIT CITY, Nov 6: Kuwait police have arrested an Egyptian expatriate accused of altering the expiry dates on spoiled fish and meat before reselling the products to restaurants, in a case raising serious concerns over food safety and public health.

The General Department of Criminal Investigation, represented by the Criminal Investigation Department, arrested the suspect following a tip-off about a warehouse in the Shuwaikh area containing spoiled fish and meat.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the suspect allegedly removed the original expiry dates from the spoiled products, replaced them with new dates and prepared the goods for sale to restaurants.

Following his arrest, investigators searched the warehouse in coordination with the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition. The suspect also led authorities to a bus he had allegedly been using to store meat.

The operation resulted in the seizure of:

  • One ton of spoiled fish
  • 68 kilograms of spoiled meat

The Public Authority for Food and Nutrition issued the necessary violations and destroyed all the seized spoiled fish and meat.

The suspect was referred to the competent authorities for further legal action.

The Ministry of Interior said the operation forms part of continuing security efforts to protect public health, combat food fraud and prevent the sale of unsafe food products.
