CAIRO, Oct 18: Egypt has pledged to provide Saudi Arabia with “all necessary and possible forms of support” to defend its security and stability amid escalating attacks by Yemen’s Houthi group against the kingdom.
The pledge was announced by Egypt’s National Defense Council following a meeting chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the presidential palace in Cairo on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS), the council reviewed what it described as “dangerous” regional developments, particularly the escalation of attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.
The council declared Egypt’s “full solidarity” with the kingdom, citing the longstanding historical ties between the two countries and stressing that Saudi national security is inseparable from Egyptian and broader Arab national security.
It decided to extend all necessary and possible forms of support to Saudi Arabia to help defend its security and stability, protect its resources and territorial integrity, and safeguard Islamic holy sites.
The council also called for continued and intensified political and diplomatic efforts, in coordination with relevant regional and international parties, to reduce tensions and work towards peaceful solutions to the region’s ongoing crises.
Senior Egyptian officials attend meeting
The Egyptian commitment comes amid a sharp escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, which has carried out missile and drone attacks targeting the kingdom.
The National Defense Council meeting was attended by senior Egyptian political, military and security officials, including the speaker of parliament, prime minister, defense minister, army chief of staff, foreign minister, interior minister, intelligence chief and commanders of the armed forces.
The council’s statement did not specify the nature of the support Egypt would provide, leaving open whether the commitment would involve military, intelligence, logistical or other forms of assistance.
The announcement underscores Cairo’s stated commitment to Saudi security and its call for coordinated regional and international efforts to prevent further escalation.
