CAIRO (AP) , April 6: Iran and the United States have received a draft proposal calling for a 45-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as part of an effort to end the ongoing conflict, two Middle Eastern officials told The Associated Press on Monday.
According to the officials, the initiative was proposed by Egyptian, Pakistani, and Turkish mediators seeking to halt hostilities and create space for further negotiations. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive talks.
The mediators hope the 45-day truce will provide a window for intensive discussions aimed at reaching a lasting peace agreement. The proposal was sent late Sunday to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, the officials said.
Neither Iran nor the United States has publicly responded to the draft. It remains unclear whether either side would accept the terms. Iranian leaders have said they will continue fighting until Tehran receives financial reparations and guarantees against future attacks, while U.S. President Donald Trump has recently threatened to target Iranian infrastructure, including bridges and power stations.
The online outlet Axios first reported details of the proposal.
