‘Economic Outcast’ Sanctions Leave 20,000 Workers Jobless in Iran’s Hormozgan

TEHRAN, Aug 28:  Around 20,000 workers are unemployed in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province amid widespread layoffs, reduced working hours and business closures, the ILNA news agency reported, citing a local labor official.

Esmail Hajizadeh, executive secretary of the province’s Workers’ House, said some companies had reduced workers’ schedules to as little as 10 days a month, while others had instructed employees to seek unemployment benefits through labor offices.

“Estimates indicate that around 20,000 workers are unemployed across Hormozgan province,” Hajizadeh said.

He said businesses operating around Rajaee Port had reduced their workforce, while a five-star hotel in Bandar Abbas dismissed all of its employees after remaining closed for four months.

Hajizadeh also highlighted growing financial pressure on households, saying the monthly cost of living for a family had risen significantly above the minimum monthly wage, further worsening the impact of job losses and reduced employment on workers across the province.
