WASHINGTON, Aug 24: The United States is entering the “endgame” of its confrontation with Iran, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday, announcing plans to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and sever what he described as its remaining financial lifelines.

In an opinion piece published by the Financial Times, Bessent called the campaign an “economic D-Day” and said Washington would target countries and entities that continue to buy or transport Iranian oil, facilitate financial transactions, host Iranian flights, maintain ship registries or assist in seaborne fuel transfers.

Bessent warned that countries and businesses maintaining economic ties with Iran could face the consequences of its isolation. He said the goal was to impose “total financial isolation” on Tehran, which he argued could reduce the need for further US military action.

“The objective is to sever every economic lifeline” sustaining the Islamic Republic, Bessent said, as Washington seeks to leave Tehran increasingly isolated economically and financially.
