KUWAIT CITY, Jan 8: The Public Prosecution ordered the detention of a well-known woman and her husband for 21 days at the Central Prison pending investigation into charges of using the drug Lyrica and money laundering. The couple had brought Lyrica into the country for personal use and failed to declare any cash upon arrival at the airport. They were also suspected of money laundering after being apprehended by security personnel.
In a separate case, a judge denied the release of two Kuwaiti citizens accused of killing a relative during a fight in Subiya on New Year’s Eve. They will remain in custody at the Central Prison, following the Public Prosecution’s detention order after their arrest by security forces. In another judicial ruling, the Criminal Court acquitted Fadhel Al-Dabbous of charges of broadcasting false news due to insufficient evidence.
Meanwhile, the Second Circuit of the Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Nasser Salem Al-Haid with Judges Mutaib Al-Aradhi and Saud Al- Sanea, applied the new drugs law in a case involving the assault of security officers, thereby reducing the defendant’s sentence from five years to one year in prison. This marks the first ruling by the Court of Appeals under the provisions of the new law. The Public Prosecution had charged the defendant with possession of narcotics and intoxicants for personal use, in addition to resisting and assaulting security officers while they were on duty. The Criminal Court had previously acquitted the defendant of the drug charge due to invalid arrest and search procedures but convicted him of assaulting security officers, sentencing him to five-year imprisonment with hard labor.
In a busy day of court proceedings, the Criminal Court sentenced a fugitive Kuwaiti woman to five years in prison for insulting His Highness the Amir, following a complaint filed by the State Security Service of the Ministry of Interior. Meanwhile,
