DUBAI, Jun 12: Dubai Customs has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 223 live animals concealed inside an abandoned suitcase at Dubai International Airport, authorities announced.

The seized animals included snakes, scorpions, lizards and frogs, which were discovered during an inspection of unclaimed baggage at the airport.

Officials said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking, protect biodiversity and prevent the illegal trade of endangered species.

Dubai Customs noted that the seizure was carried out in line with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement aimed at ensuring that trade in wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the origin or intended destination of the animals, but stressed that strict measures remain in place to detect and prevent attempts to smuggle wildlife through the emirate's ports and airports.

The case highlights continued regional efforts to crack down on illegal wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species from exploitation.
