Drug-related crimes down 17 pc: Brigadier Hashash – Securitymen nab Bedoun for stealing 9 vehicles

KUWAIT CITY, June 25: Director General of the Department of Public Relations and Security Media Brigadier Adel Al-Hashash expressed appreciation to securitymen at the General Drug Control Department and Customs (land, air & sea entry/exit points) for their efforts in combating illicit drugs.

In a statement to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking June 26th, Al-Hashash said securitymen have succeeded in the domain of tracking, arresting and preventing drug dealers from smuggling the fatal contraband in their attempt to wreak evil and destruction on the youth; the pride of the nation.

Brigadier Al-Hashash affirmed the achievements of anti-narcotics officers in reducing supply and demand, tracking and arresting smugglers and dealers. He also said drug-related crimes have reduced by 17 percent, while cases filed against unknown persons dropped to 28 percent and criminal cases 18 percent.

Recent statistics indicated up to 7,000 drug cases have been tried in court and 2,100 suspects arrested. He pointed out that drug abuse is a social issue, which is not only prevalent in one society but a global scale. He stressed international efforts is needed to combat the drug menace, especially by drying up all sources of production and trace organized mafias.

He also stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to shed light on the social, security and economic dangers of drugs, affirming the Deputy Premier and Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and Interior Ministry Undersecretary Major General Sulaiman Al-Fahd have set mechanism to overcome the phenomenon. He revealed the strategy of Security Media Department is based on local, regional and international principles amid unified integrated strategies appropriate to religious, health, social, economic, customs, family and practical axis.

Wanted Bedoun held: A wanted Bedoun man was arrested for stealing a number of vehicles. According to security sources, when security operatives affiliated to the Sulaibiya branch of the General Department of Criminal Investigations received information about the suspect’s criminal activities for which he is wanted by law as a court had sentenced him to three-month imprisonment, they launched investigations. After crosschecking the latest allegation against him and accosting him, officers discovered that various police stations have registered theft cases of nine vehicles against him. When questioned, he confessed to all accusations and was later referred to the concerned authorities for necessary legal action.
