Dozens Of Expats Victimized By Salary Extortion In Kuwait Malls

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 21: Officers from the Criminal Security Sector, including the Hawalli and Capital Governorate Investigations Departments, have apprehended a criminal gang that was exploiting expatriate workers in shopping malls across Kuwait. According to a security source, the gang employed these workers as “loaders” without paying any salaries, and in addition, extorted approximately 4 Kuwaiti dinars daily from each worker under threat of replacement.

The source explained that dozens of workers were found to be subjected to this form of exploitation. The gang members were arrested following information received by authorities indicating that several workers were not receiving any wages from their sponsoring company. Investigations revealed the shocking practice in which workers were forced to pay so-called “protection money” in order to retain their positions.

Authorities confirmed that the arrested gang members are now under investigation, as efforts continue to uncover the full extent of this exploitation and to hold all responsible parties accountable under Kuwaiti law.
