Rahane leads tourists to comprehensive eight-wicket win over Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia, Dec 29, (AP): India completed one of the greatest comebacks in cricket history on Tuesday by claiming a memorable eightwicket win over Australia on the fourth day of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India’s comprehensive victory, led brilliantly by stand-in skipper and man of the match Ajinkya Rahane, levels the four-match series at one-all. The touring team’s remarkable win comes after India scored a nationalrecord low total of 36 in an eightwicket loss in the first test in Adelaide just over a week ago.

Chasing 70 to win on Tuesday after bowling Australia out for 200 in their second innings, India comfortably reached 70-2 off 15.5 overs before the tea break. Resuming on Tuesday on 133-6, Pat Cummins (22) and Cameron Green added another 23 before Cummins fended a bouncer from Jasprit Bumrah to second slip. They shared a seventhwicket stand of 57. Second-gamer Green, 21, scored a stylish 45. Australia have failed to post an innings total of over 200 in the first two Tests.

“We played pretty poor cricket, pretty sloppy cricket,” Australia’s captain Tim Paine said. “As a batting group, we are very disappointed about what we have put up in the first two Test matches. “Dropping a number of catches probably didn’t help.
