KUWAIT CITY, Sept 26: Kuwaiti Minister of Justice Counselor Nasser Al-Sumait said domestic violence cases registered with the Public Prosecution fell by 36 percent during the first six months of implementing the Domestic Violence Protection Law. Al-Sumait told KUNA on Saturday that domestic violence cases fell by 365 to 646 from March 15 to September 13, 2026, compared to 1,011 cases during the same period in 2025.
He added that the decline reflects the impact of Decree-Law No. 11 of 2026, which strengthens protection for vulnerable family members by prohibiting waivers, reconciliation or pardons in certain domestic and sexual abuse cases. Al-Sumait explained that the decline does not mean the issue has been resolved, noting that every domestic violence case threatens family stability and requires serious attention.
The Justice Minister reaffirmed that the ministry will continue monitoring indicators and assessing the law’s impact, stressing that protecting the family is a shared national responsibility and legislation will evolve based on its effectiveness in reducing crime and promoting security and stability. The Cabinet approved the 31-article draft decree-law on domestic violence protection on February 10, later published in the Official Gazette in mid-March, to strengthen family protection, justice, dignity and stability.
