Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

MANILA, Philippines, Nov 15, (Agencies): On Wednesday, Nov 15, the Department of Justice (DOJ) emphasized its commitment to non-interference in the preliminary investigation of the criminal complaint lodged against former president Rodrigo R. Duterte. DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla assured the public of prosecutorial independence during a press briefing, emphasizing that the case does not pass through the DOJ.

Remulla's declaration comes in response to the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office issuing a subpoena to Duterte. The former president is required to appear on Dec 4 and 11 to personally submit his counter-affidavits in response to the complaint for grave threats filed by ACT Teachers Party-List Rep. France L. Castro.

"The case does not pass through the DOJ," reiterated Remulla, emphasizing the department's role in maintaining prosecutorial independence. He clarified that complaints against public officials are a part of their responsibilities as public servants. Despite potential innocence, Remulla acknowledged that public officials may face legal action, stating, "That’s part of the territory we are standing."
