Disgraced Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Sexual Assault Case

NEW YORK, Sept 24:  Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday after being convicted at a retrial of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley.

The sentencing brings another chapter in a legal case that has stretched over more than six years and followed the collapse of Weinstein’s original New York conviction. New York’s highest court overturned his 2020 conviction in 2024, ruling that he had not received a fair trial. Weinstein was subsequently retried and convicted last year on a charge of criminal sexual act involving Haley.

Judge Curtis Farber sharply criticized Weinstein as he imposed the sentence.

“You took what you wanted by force and you have never accepted responsibility,” Farber told the former Hollywood producer.

Haley, 49, told the court in a victim-impact statement that the assault had a “devastating effect” on her life and her sense of security.

Weinstein, 74, has consistently denied raping or sexually assaulting anyone. He is expected to appeal the latest conviction. During Wednesday’s proceedings, he apologized to “anyone I may have hurt by my actions,” while continuing to deny the rape allegations against him.

Weinstein, once one of Hollywood’s most influential producers, was behind films including Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction and Chocolat. His career collapsed in 2017 after reports by The New York Times and The New Yorker detailed sexual assault allegations from numerous women dating back decades. The allegations helped trigger the global #MeToo movement.

The New York case has involved three trials over allegations of rape and sexual abuse. In the earlier trial, Haley testified that Weinstein assaulted her in a bedroom at his Manhattan apartment in 2006, when she was working as a production assistant on the television series Project Runway.

Weinstein was also charged in connection with actress Jessica Mann, but jurors in the retrial could not reach a verdict on those charges. He was acquitted of another charge involving model Kaja Sokola.

Weinstein is also facing a separate conviction in California. He was convicted in 2022 of raping and sexually assaulting an actress in a Los Angeles hotel in 2013. An appeals court ordered that he be resentenced in that case following the overturning of his New York convictions.

He is currently being held at a prison ward at New York’s Bellevue Hospital, where he has received treatment for several health problems reported during his incarceration.

Following Wednesday’s sentencing, Weinstein was seated in a wheelchair and was quickly taken from the courtroom. Some of his accusers embraced and wiped away tears after the sentence was announced.
