Discover Kuwait’s Most Popular Fish Varieties – Loved Despite High Prices

KUWAIT CITY, Sep 26: Fish continues to hold a central place on the dining tables of both Kuwaiti citizens and expats, according to the latest figures released by the Central Statistical Bureau. Data for the first half of 2025 shows that the total volume of locally sold fish reached approximately 844.3 tons, generating revenues of nearly 1.78 million Kuwaiti dinars at wholesale prices.

The statistics highlight clear consumer preferences for specific fish varieties. Nuwaibi (Sea bass) topped the list, with sales exceeding 135,500 kilograms, making it the most popular choice. Meanwhile, Zubaidi (Pomfret), a cultural and culinary symbol in Kuwait, retained its prestige despite its steep cost, with sales recorded at just over 8,367 kilograms.

Other popular varieties included Hammour (Grouper), with sales of around 68,700 kilograms, and Sabour (Hilsa), which recorded approximately 18,800 kilograms. Kingfish also enjoyed strong demand, reaching nearly 120,000 kilograms in sales. Additionally, Sha’am (Carp) accounted for around 75,600 kilograms, while Sha’ari (Sea bream) registered 53,700 kilograms. Varieties such as Khabat (46,700 kilograms) and bassi (50,300 kilograms) also secured a place in the market, reflecting the wide diversity of fish consumed across Kuwait.

However, the figures also reflect the impact of prices on consumer choices. The average price of zubaidi stood at about KWD 10.11 per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive options available. By comparison, hammour was sold at KWD 4.95 per kilogram, sea bream at KWD 3.57, and sha’um at a more affordable KWD 2.89 per kilogram.

These statistics confirm that while Kuwaitis remain loyal to their traditional seafood favorites, purchasing decisions are strongly influenced by both taste preferences and household budgets. The balance between high-demand species and price-sensitive varieties illustrates how consumers navigate between tradition and affordability in maintaining fish as an essential element of the Kuwaiti diet.
