KUWAIT CITY, June 4: Mullet fish (meed) enthusiasts experienced overwhelming joy with the return of mullet fish in the market following a long wait, with the opening of the fishing season from June 1 to November 30, reports Al-Rai daily.
However, most of the stalls in the Sharq fish market were empty of mullet fish, and rest had small quantities displayed, which raised the price of mullet fish to KD 3.5 per kilogram.
Head of the Kuwait Fishermen Union Dhaher Al-Suwayan attributed the small quantities of mullet fish that came to the market to the less number of fishing boats that are operating, which did not exceed eight, until the end of the first day.
He explained that the decision of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources to allow mullet fishing from June 1 came as a surprise to everyone, especially since the authority was insisting on not fishing mullet before July 1. This confused the labor market due to the lack of fishermen and the inability to cover the needs of the local market.
In a press statement, Al-Suwayan said, "The quantities of caught mullet fish were very less, not exceeding 20 kilograms, on the first day. This increased the price of one kilogram of mullet to KD 3.5. This is definitely an exaggerated price but it is due to the lack of supply".
