Detained Bangladeshi MP a Kuwaiti national?

KUWAIT CITY, Jul 8: Controversy erupted in the Bangladesh parliament and its echos reached Kuwait when an Bangladeshi MP Harunur Rashid asked whether the Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul, Bangladeshi MP detained in Kuwait pending his accusation of money laundering, human trafficking by selling visas and bribing officials holds Kuwaiti citizenship along with his Bangladeshi nationality.

Dhaka Tribune reported that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had said the Laxmipur-2 constituency will be announced vacant, if Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul alias Kazi Papul is found to have citizenship of Kuwait.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was responding to a question by Harunur Rashid, the opposition MP from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), “We’re in talks with Kuwait government on whether Mohammad Shahid Islam (Kazi Papul) is a citizen of Kuwait or not. We will look into if he is a citizen of Kuwait or not. We’ve launched an investigation against him in our country, too”

Harunur Rashid cited various newspaper reports where Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen had said that the Kuwaiti authorities detained Bangladeshi MP to face money laundering and human trafficking charges as a “local resident” of Kuwait.

Anti Corruption Commission of Bangladesh have been after Mohammad Shahid Islam family and his sister-in-law to produce income tax documents and have also requested travel ban on MP Shahid and his family. Last month he and his family was served notice seeking their wealth statement.
