KUWAIT CITY, Sept 2, (Agencies): Kuwait on Wednesday denounced a fresh wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting several sites in the country, including a residential complex, warning that the strikes violate its sovereignty and threaten regional security and stability. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks constitute a grave breach of international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817, while undermining diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
Kuwait reaffirmed its right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security and interests and ensure the safety of citizens and residents in accordance with international law. The Kuwait Fire Force said a hostile Iranian drone struck a residential complex in the capital early Wednesday, triggering a fire that was brought under control by teams from Al-Hilali and Al-Madina fire stations. KFF spokesman Brig Gen Mohammad Al-Gharib said no injuries were reported, with the incident resulting in material damage.
Saudi tanker attack raises maritime fears. Kuwait also voiced strong opposition to an Iranian attack on the Saudi tanker Sidr while it was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, an incident that resulted in fatalities among its crew. The Foreign Ministry warned that the attack threatens the safety of international maritime navigation and global energy supplies and called for an immediate halt to escalatory actions and respect for freedom of navigation. Saudi Arabia said two Filipino sailors aboard Sidr were killed in the incident. Saudi National Shipping Company (Bahri) said the tanker, IMO No. 9854715, was involved in the security incident at about 11:40 pm Monday local time. The company expressed condolences to the sailors’ families and said it was supporting them while coordinating with authorities and maritime sector stakeholders.
Bahrain, Jordan strikes draw regional response Kuwait said Iranian attacks targeting Bahrain and Jordan were also violations of their sovereignty and called for de-escalation, dialogue and respect for the principles of good neighborliness. Bahrain said the renewed missile and drone attacks targeting Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan posed a direct threat to civilians and regional stability. It backed the affected countries’ right to defend their sovereignty and urged the UN Security Council to take effective measures to halt the attacks and protect maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Saudi Arabia likewise expressed solidarity with Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, calling for an end to escalation, respect for state sovereignty and international law, and a return to negotiations and peaceful solutions.
