Dasman conducts research into immunity, psychological aspects and diabetes

KUWAIT CITY, May 15: Dr. Fawaz Al-Zaid, a prominent researcher and head of the Department of Bioenergy and Neuroscience at the Dasman Diabetes Institute, has spearheaded two groundbreaking scientific research projects aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of diabetes. These initiatives, conducted under the auspices of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, signify a significant stride towards combating the global epidemic of diabetes and its associated complications.

Before commencing the research, Dr. Al-Zaid secured approvals from both the International Scientific Advisory Council and the Institute’s Scientific Research Ethics Review Committee, ensuring alignment with the Institute’s overarching vision and research objectives. Highlighting the collaborative nature of the projects, Dasman Diabetes Institute announced partnerships with international experts to optimize research methodologies and outcomes.

Dr. Al-Zaid, a distinguished scholar with a doctorate in human nutrition from King’s College London, brings a wealth of expertise to his research endeavors. His academic journey includes a postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Westminster, where he conducted extensive studies on appetite regulation in humans. Subsequently, he received a second postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in France, delving into the role of inflammation in insulin resistance and tissue dysfunction in diabetes.

The first project investigates the role of immune disorders in the onset of type 2 diabetes, employing state-of-the-art laboratory techniques, including animal models, scientific imaging, and genetic sequencing. This research aims to elucidate the intricate interplay between immune dysfunction and diabetes pathogenesis, with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic interventions to mitigate inflammatory responses and associated complications.

The second research endeavor focuses on exploring the impact of stress, anxiety, and depression on the management of type 1 diabetes in adults.
