The decision, endorsed by the Communist-run country's National Assembly, is part of a legislative initiative focused on modernizing Cuba's universal and free healthcare system, according to reports.

Cuba becomes the second country in Latin America and the Caribbean countries to legalize euthanasia, a practice aimed at intentionally ending life to alleviate pain and suffering.

This move aligns Cuba with several other countries and certain U.S. states that have already legalized euthanasia. Nations such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, and specific states in the United States have established legal frameworks permitting the practice.

The newly enacted legislation in Cuba emphasizes, "The right of people to a dignified death is recognized in end-of-life decisions, which may include the limitation of therapeutic effort, continuous or palliative care, and valid procedures that end life."
