Kuwaitis represent 42 pc of total ‘Health’ employees, shows study

KUWAIT CITY, May 24: A recent study concerning the distribution of employees at the Ministry of Health according to nationalities showed Kuwaitis, until the first quarter of this year, constituted 26,825 of the total 63,508 personnel, indicating Kuwaitis represented 42 percent of the number.

The second largest group made up of 23,720 foreigners represented 37 percent of the staff, while the third group of 11,888 Arabs covered 19 percent of the employees. It explained the ministry’s Legal Affairs Department has been working hard to amend some rules and regulations concerning the provision of healthcare services in hospitals and primary health centers to suit the general direction of the privatization of healthcare facilities, noting the ministry is striving to reduce the mortality rate by improving the number of medical and nursing staff, as well as family and healthcare facilities by 2020.

The causes of death in Kuwait were attributed to heart diseases, tumors, hypertension, diabetes, and traffic accidents, according to the study. It assured each of the factors would have been reduced by 2020 such that heart diseases will be 44.0 percent less, and 16.9 percent for tumors, 10.0 percent for traffic accidents, 2.9 percent for diabetes and 2.8 percent for hypertension.

Meanwhile, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) has lifted the ban on appointing non-Kuwaitis to 208 vacant professional slots in the Health Ministry, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.

The CSC has instructed the ministry to use these slots only for the appointment of dentists and medical doctors. The commission also asked the Ministry of Finance not to cancel these slots in the budget of the Health Ministry for fiscals 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. The vacant professional slots include 53 doctors, 114 nurses, 38 technicians and three pharmacists; but they will be used only for the appointment of dentists and medical doctors.

In the meantime, Kuwait’s Health Minister Dr Basel Al- Sabah said Thursday his country succeeded in mobilizing Arab and Muslim support for issuing a special resolution to resolve health issues in the occupied Palestinian territories. Sheikh Basel made his remarks to KUNA on the sidelines of his participation in the 71st World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, which kicked off on Monday and scheduled to conclude next Saturday.

The resolution also addresses the overall situations in eastern Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, said the Kuwaiti minister. It also calls to provide support to Palestinian health services, meet medical care’s urgent needs, back the Palestinian health system, and provide health care to Golan’s residents, he added. The resolution falls in with Kuwait’s permanent supportive stand with the Palestinian cause, as well as emphasizing the Palestinian right in various international events, including WHA.
