KUWAIT CITY, May 15: The Court of Cassation set June 18, 2017 for the announcement of its judgment on the Abdally Cell case filed by the State Security Department which accused 26 people of plotting heinous activities in the country.

According to the case file, the Public Prosecution urged the court to impose capital punishment — death sentence — on the accused for conspiring with Iran and Hezbollah of Lebanon. It is noteworthy that the Court of Appeals previously upheld the verdict of the Court of First Instance which sentenced one of the suspects to death and life imprisonment for another.

However, the court acquitted 10 of the suspects, while it commuted jail terms for five others and another four suspects were fined instead of jail terms. It cited incompetence to deal with the charge of the Public Prosecution against a suspect who was sentenced to death until the period of appeal lapses for the sentence in absentia or judgment in any possible appeal from the suspect. The court ruled that Kuwaiti courts could handle cases of those accused of possessing firearms and trained abroad in this regard, so the case has been referred to the Court of First Instance for hearing
