TEHRAN, Oct 14 : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said on Wednesday that a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers sank in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine and catching fire.

According to the IRGC Navy, the vessel was attempting to navigate an unauthorized and dangerous route through the strategic waterway when the incident occurred.

The navy urged local vessels and fishermen to exercise caution and avoid floating containers that could pose hazards to maritime traffic.

The statement did not identify the vessel, disclose details about its crew or provide information on possible casualties.

The reported sinking comes amid heightened maritime security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route, following a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the region.
