CONMEBOL pushes for a 64-team World Cup in 2030

NEW YORK, July 22: CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez has revealed that discussions are taking place over a proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams.

The tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup. As part of the centenary celebrations, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host one match before the tournament continues in the main host countries.

In a post on “X”, Domínguez said the 2030 World Cup could provide a historic opportunity for football to celebrate its centenary with the participation of 64 national teams.

“We are working to make the 2030 World Cup a tournament featuring 64 national teams in honor of the centenary of the competition’s creation,” Domínguez said.

He added that football continues to grow by becoming more inclusive, pointing to the expansion to 48 teams as evidence that broader participation creates more opportunities, helps develop the sport worldwide, and turns the World Cup into a truly global event.

Domínguez described the centenary edition as a unique chance to create the biggest celebration in football history, with an expanded tournament that could bring together more nations than ever before.
