Conflicting Reports Emerge Over Status of US-Iran Talks in Switzerland

GENEVA, Jun 21: Conflicting accounts emerged on Sunday over the status of US-Iran talks in Switzerland, as Iranian officials said broader negotiations depend on implementation of key ceasefire and economic provisions in a memorandum between the two sides.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported that the Iranian delegation had left the negotiations venue after meeting with the Qatari delegation, one of the mediators involved in the talks. The report fueled speculation that discussions between Tehran and Washington had been suspended or ended.

However, Axios reporter Barak Ravid cited a diplomat who participated in the talks and disputed that account.

“The Iranians haven’t left and the talks between them and the US are continuing,” the diplomat said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said negotiations on a final agreement cannot begin until several provisions of the memorandum ending the war are implemented, including a halt to fighting on all fronts and measures related to Iranian oil exports and frozen assets.

“The start of negotiations on a final agreement is contingent upon the implementation of clauses 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei wrote on X.

Baghaei said the Switzerland talks were focused on implementing the memorandum, especially clause 1 , which he said requires “an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.”

He added that the discussions were also reviewing steps linked to clause 10 , concerning Iranian oil exports, and clause 11 , involving the release of blocked Iranian assets.

Separately, Hossein Ghorbanzadeh , a member of Iran’s negotiating team, told state media that wider talks with the United States would not move forward unless the war in Lebanon ends.

Ghorbanzadeh also said executive procedures for the release of frozen Iranian funds had been carried out with the participation of the Qatari delegation, signaling possible progress on one of Tehran’s key demands.
