WASHINGTON, Aug 18: CNN issued a forceful defense of its White House correspondent Kristen Holmes on Thursday after she became the target of a verbal rebuke from President Donald Trump and a series of personal attacks from official administration social media accounts.
The confrontation unfolded when Holmes pressed the president about remarks from Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who had alleged that Trump prioritized leisure and travel with staff over his official duties.
Trump dismissed the Georgia senator as a "Pee-wee Herman look-alike" before turning his frustration on the correspondent. "You are a loud, boisterous person. You are fake news. Be quiet," the president told Holmes.
The dispute escalated beyond the briefing room, moving to social media, where an official White House account labeled Holmes a "disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession." A follow-up post went further, claiming the journalist's children would one day be "sickened and embarrassed" by her "callous and vindictive" questioning.
CNN responded with a statement describing Holmes as "one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House," adding that she had done her job by asking a "tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people."
While acknowledging that public officials have the right to challenge reporting, the network drew a line at personal attacks, calling them "beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press."
"We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms," the network said.
The incident is the latest flashpoint in Trump's combative relationship with the press. Throughout his presidency, he has repeatedly criticized media outlets and, at times, directed personal attacks at individual journalists.
