Chinese envoy cherishes Kuwaiti culture, heritage

KUWAIT CITY, June 13: In a scene that reflected the warmth of Kuwaiti hospitality and the richness of its cultural heritage, Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Yang Xin visited the Al-Fayez Diwaniya, where he immersed in the Kuwaiti cultural experience, traditions and customs distinguishing the Kuwaiti society. During the visit, the Ambassador wore the traditional Kuwaiti ‘bisht’ -- a symbol of prestige, dignity and social status. He sat among the attendees at the diwaniya, shared Arabic coffee, and participated in friendly conversations, while the fragrance of oud filled the atmosphere, creating a heritage-inspired setting, which showcased an authentic aspect of the Kuwaiti identity. He captured and shared moments during the visit in a video posted on his Instagram account.

The video showed him wearing the ‘bisht’, and receiving warm and enthusiastic welcome from those present. The video attracted significant attention from his followers and generated widespread engagement. Accompanying the video was a lighthearted caption by the Ambassador who wrote: “He who lives with people for 40 days becomes one of them, and I, in one swoop, became a sheikh… Thank you to my Kuwaiti friends.”

The statement reflected his happiness over the experience and his appreciation for the generosity, hospitality and warm reception extended to him. The visit was not just a social gathering, as it also served as a meaningful example of cultural and human exchange between Kuwait and China. It provided the Ambassador with the opportunity to experience one of the most important social traditions of Kuwait—the diwaniya, which serves as a platform for dialogue, communication and the exchange of ideas, while functioning as a venue for receiving guests and preserving and showcasing the Kuwaiti heritage. The visit depicted the image of Kuwait as a society that values and preserves its traditions and cultural legacy, while seeking to strengthen bridges of communication, understanding, and friendship with peoples and cultures from around the world.
