China Unveils World’s First Commercial 10G Broadband Network

BEIJING, April 25:  In a groundbreaking move, China has officially launched the world’s first commercial 10G broadband network, setting a new global benchmark in internet technology. The high-speed network, developed jointly by China Unicom and tech giant Huawei, was rolled out in Sunan County of Hebei Province and the futuristic Xiong’an New Area.

The network leverages cutting-edge 50G-PON (Passive Optical Network) technology, delivering lightning-fast download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps and upload speeds exceeding 1,000 Mbps. Latency has been reduced to as low as 3 milliseconds—opening up new possibilities for real-time applications and next-generation connectivity.

To put this in perspective, users can now download a 20GB 4K movie in less than 20 seconds, a task that would typically take several minutes on standard 1 Gbps networks.

This ultra-high-speed connectivity is expected to revolutionize sectors such as cloud computing, smart homes, VR/AR experiences, 8K video streaming, and autonomous technologies. It also significantly boosts China’s ambitions to build intelligent infrastructure and lead global advancements in digital urban development.

With this launch, China has not only surpassed global leaders in internet speed, such as Singapore and the UAE, but also reinforced its position at the forefront of broadband innovation.
