China takes action against more than 100 Filipinos over illegal work, residence

BEIJING, Aug. 11: Chinese authorities have taken legal action against more than 100 Philippine nationals accused of illegally working or residing in China, the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the measures were carried out in accordance with Chinese law as part of efforts by national immigration authorities to strengthen supervision of foreigners who illegally enter, live or work in the country.

Guo said Chinese immigration authorities have been conducting special operations targeting violations involving foreign nationals.

He stressed that immigration officers acted in a standardized and civil manner during the operations and ensured that the rights and legitimate interests of the foreign nationals involved were protected.

The announcement comes amid increased scrutiny by Chinese authorities of foreign nationals’ immigration and employment status as Beijing steps up enforcement of regulations governing foreigners living and working in China.
