UNITED NATIONS, Apr 16: China’s UN envoy has described the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as “a dangerous and irresponsible move,” warning that it risks further escalating regional tensions and disrupting global energy supplies.
Ambassador Fu Cong said the strait “should be safeguarded” to ensure freedom of international navigation, while urging Iran to take “proactive measures” to reopen the vital waterway, through which nearly 20% of global oil shipments pass.
Addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Fu said the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is a spillover effect of the conflict involving Iran, adding that “only a complete ceasefire can fundamentally create conditions for easing the situation.”
He said China is engaged in “intensive mediation with all parties to actively promote talks for peace” and an end to the ongoing conflict.
The 193-member UN body met to hear explanations from China and Russia after they vetoed a Security Council resolution backed by the United States and Gulf nations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Fu argued that the draft resolution would have provided “a carte blanche for the continuation of aggressive actions and further escalation” rather than encouraging de-escalation and negotiations.
