Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi
BEIJING(AP), April 16: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “unanimous demand” of the international community during a phone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
According to a Chinese government statement, Wang stressed that while Iran’s sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights as a littoral state must be respected, freedom of navigation and the safety of maritime transit through the strategically vital waterway must also be ensured. He emphasized that restoring normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz is essential amid rising regional tensions.
Wang further noted that the situation has reached a critical juncture “between war and peace,” adding that a window for diplomatic resolution is emerging. In response, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s willingness to pursue a “rational and realistic” solution through continued peaceful negotiations, signaling openness to dialogue as efforts intensify to prevent further escalation.
