TAMPA, Oct 13 : US Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that it controls the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that US forces and regional partners maintain control of the strategic waterway.

In a statement, CENTCOM said the IRGC Navy commander had claimed that any approaching US Navy warships would be “sunk.”

Responding to the threat, CENTCOM dismissed Tehran’s assertion of control over the strait and said US forces and regional partners were maintaining maritime operations through the critical shipping route.

CENTCOM said US forces had assisted Gulf partners in shipping more than 19 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz in a single day, highlighting continued efforts to keep oil shipments moving through the waterway.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over maritime security and control of the strait, a vital route for global energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption to shipping through the narrow passage could affect oil exports from Gulf producers and trigger volatility in international energy markets.

CENTCOM’s statement underscores Washington’s rejection of Iran’s claim of control and its commitment to supporting regional partners and maintaining the flow of energy shipments through the strait.
