WASINGTON, May 11: Pakistan allowed Iranian military aircraft to park on its airfields following recent regional tensions, potentially shielding them from possible US strikes, according to a report by CBS News citing unnamed US officials.
The report said Iran moved multiple aircraft to Pakistan’s Nur Khan Air Base, including an Iranian Air Force RC-130 reconnaissance aircraft, shortly after a ceasefire between the United States and Iran was announced in early April.
According to CBS News, the move was viewed by US officials as part of broader regional military and diplomatic developments involving Tehran’s efforts to reposition assets after the ceasefire.
However, a senior Pakistani official rejected the allegation, telling CBS News that aircraft stationed at the base would be visible to the public, noting that “a large fleet of aircraft parked there can’t be hidden from public eye.”
The report also claimed Iran sent civilian aircraft to Afghanistan, though it remained unclear whether any were military in nature. An Afghan civil aviation official was quoted as saying one Mahan Air civilian aircraft had stayed in the country, while Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid denied the presence of Iranian aircraft in Afghanistan.
The claims could not be independently verified.
