KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19: The Catholic Church in Kuwait has launched a humanitarian initiative to mark the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan and the start of the forty-day Lenten period for Christians.
Father Suleiman Haifaoui, the Church’s spokesperson, along with a group of priests, distributed dates and water to passersby about half an hour before the Maghrib prayer outside the Holy Family Cathedral. The gesture reflected the spirit of love, compassion, and interfaith harmony that characterizes Kuwaiti society.
Father Haifaoui said the initiative carried a profound symbolic message: despite differences in tradition, fasting centers on repentance, prayer, mercy, and serving humanity. He added that the event underlined Kuwait’s role as a model of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among followers of different religions.
He highlighted the spiritual significance of this year’s overlapping fasts, describing it as a shared call to return to God, purify hearts, and engage in good deeds. “Believers in the one God are invited to walk together on the path of repentance and prayer and to be witnesses to love and peace in society,” he said.
Offering prayers for the nation, Father Haifaoui asked God to protect His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad, and His Highness the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, and to preserve Kuwait’s security, stability, and tradition of tolerance and freedom of worship.
Organizers said the initiative also aimed to promote a culture of coexistence and reinforce Kuwait’s image as a society embracing religious and cultural diversity, where spiritual values are expressed through service to humanity.
The gesture was warmly received by passersby, who praised it as a reflection of Kuwait’s cohesive society, rooted in respect, brotherhood, and solidarity.
