MUSCAT, Jun 25: A cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman on Thursday, causing damage to its bridge, but no casualties or environmental impact were reported, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The UKMTO said the incident occurred at 2:10 PM UTC, approximately 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Dahit, Oman. The vessel’s master reported that the ship was hit on the starboard side by an unidentified projectile, resulting in damage to the bridge.

“All crew are safe and there is no environmental damage,” the maritime security agency said.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned ships against using routes through the strategic waterway unless they were authorized by Tehran.

Despite the warning, vessel-tracking data indicated that maritime traffic along routes near Oman continued on Thursday.

Authorities have not identified the source of the projectile or those responsible for the incident.
