KUWAIT CITY, Jan 15: Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State under Pope Leo XIV, presided over a solemn Mass at the Holy Family Co-Cathedral in Kuwait City Thursday night. The celebration gathered a distinguished congregation of Arab and foreign ambassadors, diplomats accredited to Kuwait, and around 70 priests who traveled from various Gulf states to accompany the Cardinal.

The liturgy marked a momentous occasion— the elevation of the Church of Our Lady of Arabia in Ahmadi to the veneration of the Mother of the Savior. This decree, Cardinal Parolin noted, reflects the enduring Marian devotion among the Christian community in Kuwait. He also conveyed Pope Leo XIV’s warm greetings and spiritual closeness to the faithful.

Cardinal Parolin highlighted that the celebration coincided with the 65th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral of the Holy Family, a historic center of encounter and dialogue among people of different cultures and religions. Expressing joy at his first visit to Kuwait, the Cardinal described the significance of celebrating the Eucharist in a church “between the sea and the desert,” symbolizing spiritual refuge for generations of believers from diverse nations who came to Kuwait in pursuit of work and found faith and peace through Christ.

Reflecting on the cathedral’s patronage, he said the Holy Family of Nazareth represents a model of Christian life rooted in communion, faith, hope, and love—values that form the foundation of family and community life. He drew attention to the spiritual symbolism of Kuwait’s geography, describing the desert as a place of silence, repentance, and encounter with God, and the sea as a symbol of providence, unity, and new beginnings echoing the Gospel image of Christ calling His disciples from the shore.

Cardinal Parolin reminded the faithful that the Church is not defined by walls or structures, but by the living people of God, each person a temple of the Holy Spirit. He urged the community to be “living stones” in building the one holy and universal Church, united in cultural and liturgical diversity under Christ. In conclusion, he called for renewed dedication to making the Church in Kuwait a beacon of faith, peace, and dialogue a witness of unity and coexistence under the protection of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Family, in service to humanity.
