Burgan player goes for a shot against Dar Kulaib as teammates and officials look on.

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 8: Burgan Club’s first volleyball team suffered a second consecutive defeat after losing to Bahrain’s Dar Kulaib in Group C of the preliminary round of the 4th West Asia Volleyball Championship, currently being held at the Federation Hall in the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex and running until February 14.

Burgan went down in straight sets, 0–3 (16–25, 19–25, 15–25), marking its second loss of the competition following an identical defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad. This result significantly weakens its chances of reaching the quarterfinals.

In the same group, Oman’s Al-Seeb defeated Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia 3–1 (25–20, 26–24, 22–25, 25–14).

In Group B, Qatar’s Al-Wakrah beat Lebanon’s Shabab Al-Batroun 3–1 (25–23, 19–25, 29–27, 25–19). At the same time, Group A concluded with Qatar’s Al-Rayyan topping the standings, followed by Iraq’s Ghaz Al-Janoub in second place and Oman’s Majees in third.

According to the tournament format, the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, along with the two best third-placed teams from the three groups. The preliminary stage concluded late last night, with the final round results determining the quarterfinal matchups.

Teams will have a rest day today, with the quarterfinal matches scheduled for Tuesday.
