LONDON, Apr 15: Keir Starmer has defended plans for King Charles III to visit the United States later this month, despite criticism linked to tensions with Donald Trump.
Speaking in Parliament, Starmer said the visit marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and reflects the enduring ties between the two nations, stressing that the relationship is more important than any individual political leader. The visit drew criticism from Ed Davey, who questioned sending the monarch amid Trump’s threats to scrap a trade deal and pressure the UK over the Iran conflict.
Separately, Starmer made clear that Britain will not be drawn into any war with Iran, firmly rejecting pressure from Trump. He reiterated that joining such a conflict is not in the UK’s national interest and confirmed that his position remains unchanged.
