MANAMA, Oct 31: Britain has deployed air-defense equipment and military personnel to Saudi Arabia to help protect the Kingdom against missile and drone attacks following renewed Houthi aggression, British Minister of State for the Middle East Stephen Doughty announced on Saturday.

Speaking at the 22nd IISS Manama Dialogue in Bahrain, Doughty confirmed that British forces were working closely with Saudi Arabia to strengthen its air defenses.

"Currently, today we are working closely with our friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where UK air defense equipment and personnel are helping protect against missiles and drones," Doughty said.

He added that Britain had provided further defensive support following renewed Houthi attacks.

The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia faces escalating missile and drone threats from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement.

Britain had previously confirmed that it was providing air-defense equipment and personnel to Saudi Arabia. On October 20, the UK government announced additional military assistance, including Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets to conduct defensive counter-air missions over Saudi Arabia.

The additional package also includes an RAF A400M transport aircraft to move defense equipment within the Kingdom, military advisers to support Saudi staff officers and an extension of air-to-air refueling assistance.

The British government has stressed that the Typhoon aircraft will operate in a defensive capacity and will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis.

UK expands defense support across Gulf

Doughty also outlined Britain's military support for other regional partners during Iranian attacks.

He said British forces had conducted defensive RAF missions over Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, while air-defense support had also been deployed to Bahrain and Kuwait to help protect against missile and drone threats.

He warned that Iran and its regional allies continued to pose serious security threats and reiterated Britain's position that Tehran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

"We are clear and united in understanding the threat that is posed by Iran and the very serious threats from Iran and its proxies," he said.

The British minister stressed that regional partners, civilians, commercial interests and critical infrastructure must be protected against attacks.

Britain calls for diplomacy and maritime security

Despite expanding its defensive military support, Doughty emphasized that Britain continued to support diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.

"We must strain every sinew for peace. And the United Kingdom will certainly not stand by. We will take part actively in those efforts," he said.

He reaffirmed Britain's commitment to standing alongside regional partners when their security and interests come under threat.

"When our interests, when the security of our partners and friends are under attack, we will stand and support with actions and not just words," Doughty said.

He also highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation and maritime security, warning against attacks on civilians, critical infrastructure and commercial shipping.

The British minister's remarks come amid growing regional instability, renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and continuing concerns over the security of vital energy supplies and international shipping routes.
