NEW DELHI, Mar 4 (Agencies): A serene day of travel in India took a harrowing turn for an influencer couple on a motorcycle journey when they fell victim to a brutal assault by a group of assailants, who allegedly subjected the woman to multiple rapes, local authorities reported on Saturday.

Fernanda and Vicente, known for chronicling their global adventures to over 140,000 Instagram followers, were passing through the Dumka district in India en route to Nepal when the traumatic incident occurred. Their intended overnight stop in Dumka for camping turned into a nightmare, as recounted by multiple sources.

In distressing Instagram videos, the couple displayed visible injuries, with swollen, bruised faces, tearfully narrating the ordeal in Spanish. Fernanda, in one clip, revealed the horrific ordeal of being raped by seven men, who also physically assaulted and robbed them. She emphasized that the assailants’ primary intent was sexual assault, with theft being secondary.

According to local reports, Fernanda managed to seek help from a passing patrol van around 11 p.m. and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the district’s police superintendent, confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the assault and stated that efforts to apprehend additional perpetrators were underway.

In subsequent social media updates, Vicente showcased his injuries, including a damaged mouth with visible stitches, while expressing concern for Fernanda’s well-being, noting that she had sustained more severe injuries. He recounted the viciousness of the attack, detailing how he was repeatedly struck with a helmet and a rock.

The incident has once again highlighted India’s alarming statistics on sexual violence, with nearly 90 reported rapes per day in 2022, as per the National Crime Records Bureau. However, underreporting remains a significant issue due to victim-blaming and skepticism about law enforcement’s ability to deliver justice.

As of Saturday, Fernanda and Vicente remained hospitalized under police custody, with the investigation ongoing.
