MUMBAI, Oct 15: Mumbai Police have issued a notice to Bollywood actor Imran Khan, an American citizen and nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, directing him to leave India by October 28 for allegedly violating provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act by participating in a political protest.
According to police officials, the action follows Khan’s participation in a demonstration in Mumbai on October 10, where protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation was held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party.
Police had briefly taken the actor into custody during the demonstration.
A police official said Khan was not an Indian citizen and that relevant provisions of the Foreigners and Immigration laws restrict foreign nationals from participating in political protests or political activities on Indian soil.
The police have served a formal notice directing Khan to leave the country by October 28. He has received a copy of the notice, and further administrative procedures are underway, officials said.
The action follows a request by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirit Somaiya, who had urged Mumbai Police to take action against Khan for participating in the protest despite being a foreign national.
Somaiya had also sought clarification on whether foreign citizens were permitted to participate in such political agitations in India.
The police action centres on Khan’s participation in the demonstration and his status as a foreign national. The specific legal provisions invoked in the notice were not detailed in the information provided by the officials.
