KOCHI, Mar 13: A chartered Iranian aircraft departed southern India late Friday carrying sailors from an Iranian naval vessel that had docked in the country, as well as the bodies of crew members killed in a U.S. attack off Sri Lanka, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The aircraft had earlier flown from Sri Lanka, transporting the remains of 84 Iranian sailors who died when a U.S. submarine struck an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka’s coast last week, an Indian official with direct knowledge said.
After landing in the southern Indian city of Kochi, the plane departed with sailors from another Iranian vessel along with Iranian tourists stranded in India, the official added.
An Iranian source confirmed the departure from Kochi but declined to provide further details about the plane’s destination or security arrangements.
