KUWAIT CITY, May 26: The head of the Fungi Laboratory Unit at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health, Dr. Khaled Al-Obaid, said there is no evidence to indicate the existence of any direct relationship between the emerging coronavirus (COVID-19) and the socalled ‘black fungus’ disease, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Al-Obaid, a clinical microbiologist consultant, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) yesterday that this fungal disease is not contagious and does not cause epidemics. He said that calling this disease the black fungus is ‘wrong’ as the fungi are called by the scientific names found in the scientific works, and it is not correct to call them black or other colors.

The correct name is the Mucormycosis that belongs to the family of fungi (Mucorales). He mentioned it is a common fungus in the environment, such as soil and plants, as well as in the air, and like other living organisms it plays an important role in the ecological balance process, such as the analysis of organic matter and others. He pointed out that, on the other hand, this type of fungus may lead to the occurrence of some serious diseases such as sinusitis, which may sometimes extend to the eyes and brain, as well as pneumonia, especially in patients who have severe immunity weakness and patients with diabetes, specifically those whose sugar level is irregular. They are more likely to be affected by it.

Al-Obaid stated that the spread of this fungal disease in India has been observed in patients with COVID-19, causing serious infections that include the sinuses that may sometimes extend to the eyes and brain. He pointed to a recent study that included 18 countries in Europe, America and Asia, which showed that the cases of mucous fungi associated with the disease (Covid-19) are very few compared to India, knowing that COVID-19 is spread all over the world and this indicates that the relationship between the two diseases is excluded to some extent. Regarding prevention methods, he indicated that immunity compromised patients should adhere to health measures to prevent acquiring Covid-19 infection. As for diabetics, they must maintain the regularity of blood sugar levels by following the doctor’s instructions in addition to following preventive measures as well as vaccination
