MEXICO CITY, Jul 2: Mexico City’s Public Health Secretariat reported that four people have died during nationwide celebrations following the Mexican national football team’s World Cup victory over Ecuador.
Health authorities said three of the victims died from asphyxiation. The deceased include two women aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man. A fourth victim, a 30-year-old man, was earlier taken to hospital after suffering an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding, and later died from cardiorespiratory arrest.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full support for the ongoing investigation.
“On behalf of the Mexico City government and on my own behalf, we express our deepest sorrow over the deaths of the people who lost their lives yesterday during the celebrations at the Angel of Independence,” she said, adding that authorities would provide full assistance to affected families.
Officials said an estimated 1.4 million people took to the streets following the match, with large crowds gathering around the Angel of Independence, a major landmark in the capital.
The Public Health Secretariat also reported that 1,615 people received medical attention during the celebrations, while dozens were hospitalized due to injuries and health emergencies.
Separately, authorities confirmed the death of a 44-year-old man in the northwestern state of Baja California, who was reportedly killed after his vehicle struck a supporter amid post-match celebrations and ensuing crowd chaos.
