NEW DELHI, Feb 21: The University Grants Commission (UGC), India’s statutory higher education regulator under the Ministry of Education, has flagged 32 institutions operating as fake universities across the country, warning students that degrees issued by them carry no legal validity for employment or further studies.

Delhi tops the list with 12 unrecognized entities, followed by Uttar Pradesh with four. Other states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan, also feature in the list. Students have been strongly advised to verify the recognition status of any institution before enrolling.

The UGC clarified that these universities do not hold recognition from either the Central Government or any State Government. Citing Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, the Commission stressed that degrees from these bodies are illegal and unacceptable for higher education or employment purposes.

The UGC reiterated that students must remain vigilant and ensure that the institutions they join are officially recognized, emphasizing that falling prey to fake universities can result in wasted time, money, and career setbacks.
