LOS ANGELES, Nov 16, (Agencies): Chris Pine is embracing another Disney royal role as he steps into the animated world of Wish. The 43-year-old actor, known for his previous Disney roles in The Princess Diaries 2 and Into the Woods, now takes on the character of Magnifico, an evil king with mystical powers in charge of his subjects’ wishes.

In Wish, Pine’s character clashes with Asha, played by Ariana DeBose, a teen girl attempting to save her kingdom from impending darkness by wishing upon a star. The star-studded cast also includes Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Evan Peters, Harvey Guillén, Ramy Youssef, Niko Vargas, Della Saba, and Jon Rudnitsky.

Pine expresses his delight in voicing the morally ambiguous king, describing it as the most enjoyable experience he’s had in a while. He highlights the freedom he had to explore the character’s complexity, emphasizing the desire for audiences to both love and hate the bad guys.

While Pine didn’t draw direct inspiration from classic Disney villains, he appreciates the layered perspective Magnifico brings to the villain Rolodex. Despite the warning in the film that cautions against trusting a handsome face, Pine suggests the real caution should be against trusting vacant charm.

In addition to his acting prowess, Pine showcases his musical talents in Wish, including a great solo song for his character. Despite any reservations, Pine holds his own opposite the Oscar-winning DeBose, with the actress praising his singing ability.

“It’s just not something I do on a daily,” Pine admits, humbly acknowledging his initial apprehension about singing. However, DeBose is quick to dispel any doubts, declaring, “He can sing! He can absolutely sing.”
