LONDON, Oct 20: The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) plans to close its BBC Three and BBC Scotland television channels in the spring and move their content exclusively online as part of a sweeping cost-cutting programme aimed at saving £500 million ($670 million) over two years.
The publicly funded broadcaster will also shut down Radio 4 Extra, which primarily airs archived speech programmes, including comedy, drama and documentaries, as it responds to mounting financial pressures and changing audience habits.
The closures form part of a wider restructuring plan under which the BBC intends to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs, representing almost one in 10 of its workforce.
BBC Three and BBC Scotland will continue to produce some content for the BBC iPlayer streaming platform, while audiences will be able to access much of the programming currently carried by the affected services through iPlayer and BBC Sounds.
BBC Director-General Matt Brittin said the measures were necessary to manage immediate financial pressures while adapting the corporation to changing viewing and listening habits.
“We need to make every pound work harder for audiences as we respond to the immediate cost pressures and reinvent the BBC for a changing world. We all know that means tough choices,” Brittin said.
Addressing the closure of traditional broadcasting services, Brittin said much of the content would remain available through the BBC’s digital platforms.
“Much of the great content they currently carry will still be found where audiences already enjoy them on iPlayer and Sounds,” he said.
Brittin acknowledged that the announcement would be difficult for viewers, listeners and employees, despite earlier media speculation about the proposed closures.
The BBC also confirmed further job cuts in its news division on Tuesday, with additional details expected from newly appointed news director Rachel Jupp.
Around 550 job cuts have already been announced in the news division, while more than 30 positions have been targeted at BBC Sport.
The latest measures follow the cancellation of several high-profile BBC television series in recent weeks, underscoring the scale of the restructuring as the corporation seeks to address what it has described as “significant financial pressures.”
The planned closures and job reductions mark a major shift in the BBC’s operations as it seeks to prioritise digital services while reducing costs across its broadcasting and news operations.
