Bangladesh urges India to expedite Sheikh Hasina's extradition

DHAKA, Aug 10: Bangladesh has urged India to expedite the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and reiterated its request for the return of people accused in the killing of Osman Hadi, officials said Monday.

The issue was raised during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s press wing, Bangladesh “hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina.” The meeting was described as a courtesy call, with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and other officials also present.

Bangladesh also requested the extradition of those accused in the killing of Osman Hadi, The Daily Star reported.

Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of creating an appropriate environment to strengthen bilateral relations further.

The meeting came amid heightened tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi over Hasina, who has remained in India since leaving Bangladesh following her ouster.

Last week, Bangladesh strongly protested after Hasina participated in a media interaction in New Delhi on August 5. Dhaka accused her of making inflammatory remarks against Bangladesh and its government.

India said it had no role in organizing the event and did not endorse remarks made there concerning Bangladesh’s “duly constituted government.”

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said Monday that the issue was also discussed with Trivedi. He said India had been informed of Dhaka’s position and had taken the matter seriously.

Rahman argued that Hasina, having been convicted by a Bangladeshi court, should address any defense or legal claims through the country’s judicial system.

Meanwhile, India has invited Tarique Rahman to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi in September in his capacity linked to Bangladesh’s role as chair of BIMSTEC.

Trivedi confirmed that the invitation had been extended and said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India were looking forward to Tarique Rahman’s visit.

“When two leaders sit together and have a discussion, there will be issues in a democracy,” Trivedi told reporters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations between the neighboring countries.

“We don’t only share a border, we share dreams,” he added, expressing confidence that bilateral relations would improve in the coming days.

However, neither Trivedi nor the Indian High Commission publicly referred to Bangladesh’s request for Hasina’s extradition following the meeting.
