DHAKA, Feb 10, (Xinhua): Bangladesh is all set for Thursday's general elections in which more than 127 million voters are expected to cast their ballots at over 42,000 polling stations across the country, a senior official said Tuesday. All election preparations are now complete, Akhtar Ahmed, Bangladeshi Election Commission's senior secretary, said.
According to the official, ballot papers and all other polling materials have already been delivered for 299 of the 300 constituencies. He said polling in one constituency has been postponed due to the death of a candidate and will be held later. Voting in the country's 13th general election and referendum will take place simultaneously nationwide from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, he added in his remarks at the inauguration of a media center for foreign journalists and media professionals in Dhaka.
The country's election authorities had earlier said that more than 127 million voters had been registered for the election for the first time since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country in August 2024. The Bangladeshi parliament comprises a total of 350 members, of which 50 seats are reserved for women who are elected later by the 300 directly-elected members on the basis of procedure of proportional representation in the parliament through single transferable vote.
