Bahrain, Saudi Arabia condemn Iranian attack on tanker that killed two Filipino sailors

MANAMA, Sep 2: Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on Wednesday condemned an Iranian attack on the Saudi-flagged oil tanker Sidr in the Strait of Hormuz, which killed two Filipino crew members and raised fresh concerns over the safety of international maritime traffic.

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry said the attack violated international law and posed a serious threat to maritime security and freedom of navigation. It called on the UN Security Council to take measures to halt attacks threatening shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and other international waterways.

Saudi Arabia also condemned Iran’s targeting of the Sidr while it was transiting the strategic waterway. Saudi national shipping company Bahri said two Filipino seafarers were killed in the August 31 incident.

Riyadh also condemned Iranian attacks on Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, expressing full support and solidarity with the three countries in measures taken to protect their security and sovereignty.

Saudi Arabia called for an end to the escalation, respect for the safety of international navigation and global energy supplies, and adherence to state sovereignty, the UN Charter and international law. It urged all sides to de-escalate tensions and return to negotiations and peaceful solutions.
